Top Gun Motorsports penalized following Ace Speedway

The Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour has handed out penalties to Top Gun Motorsports following events that transpired in Friday’s AcceleratedGFX.com 315 at Ace Speedway.

For running out onto the racing surface to assist their driver Chase Burrow, who had flipped upside down following an incident between him and Ryan Wilson, Top Gun Motorsports was issued a fine of $1,100 and placed on probation until the end of the 2023 season.

CARS Tour general manager Jack McNelly said the decision by Top Gun Motorsports crew members to help Burrow in that scenario violated safety protocols established by the CARS Tour and stressed that having unauthorized personnel on track both complicates rescue procedures and increases injury risks.

“The intentions might have been good, but we can’t have people running out onto the track,” McNelly said. “It all comes down to safety at the end of the day. We have to give the professionals at the track a chance to do their job in helping a driver that requires assistance.”

With 58 laps remaining, Burrow climbed on the side of Wilson’s car as the two raced for position at the tail end of the field. The resulting contact into the outside retaining wall ripped the side off Wilson’s car and sent Burrow on his lid.

McNelly was thankful both drivers escaped the accident with minimal injuries and hopes the penalties handed out to Top Gun Motorsports discourages other teams from performing similar actions should their drivers require the assistance of track crews or medical personnel.

Burrow will be back behind the wheel of his familiar black and white No. 8 Chevrolet when the CARS Late Model Stock Car Tour heads to North Wilkesboro Speedway for the Window World 125 on May 17, which will be shown live on FloRacing.
